February 8, 2024, Peoria, IL –Today, Donte A. Wright, 25, was charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Armed Habitual Criminal stemming from a shooting on Gale Avenue on January 26. No one was injured in the shooting, but a stray bullet hit a Peoria Police squad car. The state’s petition to detain Wright was granted, and he will remain in custody at the Peoria County Jail until his trial.
Around 5 pm on January 26, officers were responding to an accident at the I-74 overpass on Gale when officers heard 15 gunshots nearby and stray bullets flying past them. One of those bullets hit a Peoria Police squad car. During the investigation, detectives reviewed cameras in the area and eyewitness accounts to develop a suspect vehicle and suspect. In the camera images, a backseat passenger, identified as Wright, can be seen pointing a handgun outside the window. When Wright was taken into custody, a gun was recovered, and Wright admits to it being his. Tests on the gun match it to casings recovered from the shooting.
